
Stop the Chipping: Why Infrared Preheating Actually Works
Cutting cold glass is a bit of a gamble. You score the surface, you push, and you pray. The problem is that cold glass is stubborn. When that cutting head hits, it creates a lot of tension in one tiny spot. If the glass is too chilled, the crack doesn’t always follow your line. It wanders. That’s how you end up with those annoying chips or a corner that just snaps off for no reason. We deal with this by using infrared (IR) annealing. Basically, we warm the glass up right before the blade touches it. The science part (made simple) Here’s the thing: IR lamps don’t waste time heating up the air in the room. They send energy straight into the glass. This quick burst of heat relaxes the surface and makes the material a bit more flexible. Instead of the fracture jumping around, it follows the score line in a clean, straight shot. It’s a simple change, but it kills your scrap rate. Getting the gear right We usually go with shortwave IR emitters. Why? Because they punch through the glass much faster than the medium or longwave stuff. When your conveyor is moving, you don’t have all day to get the glass to temperature. You need a high power density to get the job done in a few seconds. But a word of warning: if you go for a high-wattage array, remember that heat goes everywhere. A lot of it bounces right back toward your machine frame. If you don’t have the right shielding or beefy cooling fans, you’re going to cook your sensors and fry your wiring. It’s a mess you really don’t want to clean up. The reality of setting it up You can’t just blast the glass with heat and call it a day. If one spot is hot and the next is cold, you’ve just created new stress points. That’s a great way to make the glass crack during the cut. We use PID controllers to keep things steady. It ensures the temperature is the same from one edge of the sheet to the other. Now, there is a trade-off. Your power bill will go up. Running a full bank of IR lamps isn’t free. But honestly? Paying a bit more for electricity is way cheaper than throwing away oversized sheets or spending hours manually grinding down chipped edges. It just makes sense.
