
Why Your IR Lamps Are Probably Messing Up Your Borosilicate Annealing
Anyone who’s spent time annealing borosilicate glass knows the frustration of “batch drift.” You pull the first tray out and it’s flawless. Then you hit the last tray and—boom—residual stress or weird deformations. It’s a nightmare. Usually, the culprit isn’t your process. It’s your lamps. Here’s the thing: if your heating lamps aren’t putting out the exact same wattage across the board, you’re fighting a losing battle.
The Headache of Cold Spots
Imagine you have a bank of lamps spec’d at 1000W. But one of them is actually putting out 920W. On paper, that doesn’t seem like much. In the world of borosilicate, it’s a disaster. A few degrees of difference can shift the viscosity of the glass just enough to ruin the whole batch. We obsess over tight wattage tolerances because it means you don’t have to “over-cook” everything just to make sure the weakest lamp is doing its job.
Getting the Heat Where it Matters
We use high-purity quartz envelopes for a reason. They let the shortwave IR penetrate deep into the glass. Instead of just scorching the surface, the heat actually hits the core. But you have to be careful with your power supply. I’ve seen people try to “fix” a cold spot by pushing a lamp beyond its rated voltage. Don’t do that. You’ll just burn out the filament and be right back where you started, only with a dead bulb.
A Word of Warning on Heat Density
When your lamps are consistent, you get a massive amount of heat density. It’s great for ramping up temperatures quickly. It feels efficient. It feels fast. But that heat has to go somewhere. If your cooling fans or heat sinks aren’t up to the task, all that ambient heat will start eating away at your controllers and wiring. Make sure your chassis can handle the load before you crank it up. At the end of the day, it’s not about finding one “perfect” lamp. It’s about making sure Lamp A is a twin to Lamp B. Once you have that, you can stop chasing your tail with temperature tweaks every time you swap a bulb.
