
Getting the Heat Right: Why Generic Lamps Fail at Glass Sealing
If you’re working with specialized glass, you’ve probably noticed that standard infrared lamps just don’t cut it. Maybe your glass has specific dopants for optical tricks or modifiers to handle thermal expansion. Whatever the case, a generic lamp is like trying to unlock a door with the wrong key. It might look similar, but it won’t open. To get a seal that’s clean and totally bubble-free, the light coming off the lamp has to hit the exact “sweet spot” where your glass actually absorbs energy.
It’s All About the Match
We don’t just crank up the wattage and hope for the best. That’s a recipe for disaster. Here’s the thing: different glass additives “drink” energy at different wavelengths. If the lamp isn’t tuned to match the glass’s absorption peak, the energy just bounces off the surface. The result? Your glass surface gets scorching hot while the core stays cold. That’s how you get cracks. Or worse, a seal that looks okay on the outside but is uneven and weak on the inside. To fix this, we tweak the filament material and the quartz envelope. We shift the emission curve so the photons actually go where they’re needed.
The Trade-off
Now, there is a catch. When you tune a lamp for precision, you usually lose some raw power. A narrow-band lamp is like a laser—it’s incredibly focused, but it doesn’t blast the whole assembly with heat as fast as a standard halogen lamp would. You’ll probably need to slow down your conveyor or let the tubes sit a bit longer. It’s a small price to pay for a seal that actually holds.
