
How to stop the shivers in wet zones
Nobody likes that freezing blast of air when they’re stepping out of a shower or changing in a cold locker room. If you want a space to feel warm in seconds—not minutes—you can’t rely on heating the air. That’s where shortwave infrared (IR) comes in. Instead of waiting for a convection heater to slowly warm up the room, these units send heat straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. We use quartz halogen tubes to make it happen. It’s basically instant. The secret sauce Inside the unit, there’s a quartz tube filled with a specific halogen gas mix. This is the clever part: the gas stops the tungsten filament from wearing out too fast. Because we can push the filament to much higher temperatures without it blowing, we get a massive amount of heat coming from a tiny piece of hardware. You flip the switch, and boom. You feel the warmth immediately. Built for the steam Bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Humidity and steam eat through gear. To stop that, we wrap everything in IP-rated enclosures to keep the moisture away from the electrical guts. We also use quartz glass because it handles “thermal shock” like a champ. It can jump from a chilly 15°C to a scorching 600°C in a heartbeat without cracking. Plus, we line the reflectors with gold or aluminum. That way, the heat bounces down toward the people, rather than just wasting energy heating up the ceiling. The “gotchas” It’s not all plug-and-play. These heaters pull a lot of power. If you’re putting a bunch of these into a commercial gym or spa, don’t skimp on the wiring. Cheap wires will get hot, and that’s a problem you don’t want. Then there’s the placement. Since the heat is so direct, you have to be careful where you mount them. Too low, and you’re risking a burn. Too high, and that “instant” feeling disappears. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between the wattage and the height.
