Getting the Power Right for Your Bathroom Heater
Picking the right wattage for an infrared towel rail isn’t some magic formula. It really just comes down to two things: how big is your bathroom, and how fast do you want those towels to dry? We don’t believe in a “one size fits all” setup. Here’s why. Infrared heat travels in a straight line. If you put a weak heater in a big, drafty room, that heat just vanishes into the air before it even touches your towel. You’ll end up with a damp towel and a cold bathroom.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), keep it simple. A 200W to 400W lamp is plenty. It keeps things dry without turning the room into a sauna. For those medium-sized bathrooms (4m² to 8m²), you’ll want to bump that up to 600W or 800W. That’s where you get that consistent, cozy warmth. But if you’ve got a massive master bath (over 10m²), you’re looking at 1000W or more. In those cases, it’s often better to just install a few different heating points so you aren’t fighting the size of the room. Just a heads up: don’t go overboard. Putting a massive heater in a tiny closet-sized bathroom is a waste of electricity, and you’ll probably keep triggering the thermal cutoff.
The Nitty-Gritty on Efficiency
Think about the heat density. When you cram more wattage into a shorter tube, it gets intense. That’s great if you’re in a rush, but it puts a lot of stress on the quartz glass. Also, keep an eye on your wiring. Most of these run on standard 220V-240V lines, but if you’re installing a high-power array, check your cables. If the wires are too thin, they’ll actually heat up under a 1200W load, which kills your efficiency.
The Trade-off
More power means faster drying. Simple, right? But there is a catch: the “hot spot.” A high-wattage lamp can get incredibly hot in one specific area. If you drape a delicate fabric too close to the element, you risk scorching it. The trick is getting the mounting distance just right. Give the fabric some breathing room, and you’ll get that perfect, warm-towel feeling without the worry of burning a hole in your favorite robe.
