
Stop Just Swapping Your Quartz Tubes
It seems easy enough, right? A tube burns out, you find one with the same wattage and length, plug it in, and you’re back in business. But here’s the thing: if that tube died way before it was supposed to, putting in an identical replacement is basically just hitting the snooze button on the next failure. You’re not fixing the problem; you’re just resetting the clock.
Why they actually break
We see this every day on the shop floor. Tubes don’t just “die”—they tell a story. If the filament is snapping right at the ends, you’ve got a thermal expansion mismatch. If the glass looks cloudy or smeared, something in the product you’re heating is leaking chemicals onto the tube. Sure, matching the voltage is the bare minimum. But we care more about heat density. If you cram a high-wattage tube into a tiny space, you create these brutal hotspots. If your cooling fans are choked with dust or your reflectors are oxidized, that heat has nowhere to go. It just sits there, baking the glass until it pops.
The trade-offs you need to know
Picking a tube isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. Halogen lamps run hotter and generally last longer, but they’re picky—they need your voltage to be spot on. Then you’ve got coated tubes. These are great for getting heat deeper into your materials, but if you cycle the power too aggressively, that coating can start to flake off. Even the connectors can trip you up. Whether it’s an R7s or a specialized Sk15, a loose fit is a nightmare. It creates a tiny arc of electricity. That arc generates heat, melts your socket, and kills your brand-new lamp in a matter of weeks.
We’d rather diagnose than just ship a box
This is why we push for a site diagnostic. A lamp is just one piece of a bigger puzzle. We want to check the ripple in your power supply and see how your reflectors are aligned. If those reflectors are pitted or dirty, you’re losing maybe 20% of your heat. The temptation then is to just crank up the power to make up for it. **Don’t do that.**That’s the fastest way to fry your filament. We aren’t just here to sell you a part.
