
Stop Fighting the Draft: A Better Way to Heat Changing Rooms
Let’s be honest: changing rooms are a nightmare to keep warm. You’ve got those massive ceiling voids and doors that are constantly swinging open, letting all the warmth escape. If you use standard forced-air heating, you’re basically throwing money at the ceiling. The air gets warm, it floats straight up, and the person standing below is still shivering. It just doesn’t work. That’s why we stopped trying to heat the room and started heating the people. We use recessed infrared heaters in the ceiling that beam heat directly down. It’s a lot like standing in the sun. Instead of waiting for the whole room to warm up, these units use shortwave infrared radiation. This stuff travels in a straight line. It doesn’t care about the air temperature; it only warms up when it hits something solid—like a person. You get a cozy heat zone in seconds. Now, there’s a bit of a balancing act with the technical side. We use quartz elements because they heat up almost instantly, but you can’t just slap them in. You need solid thermal insulation around the housing so you don’t accidentally bake your ceiling joists. And keep an eye on your ceiling height. A heater at 3 meters feels very different from one at 2.5 meters. If you go too heavy on the wattage, you’ll end up with “hot spots” that make people feel like they’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet. Not exactly the vibe you’re going for. There is a trade-off, though. Recessed units look great—clean and flush—but they’re a pain to maintain. If an element goes out, you’re climbing into the ceiling or messing with a service panel. To save yourself the headache later, use high-temp wiring and make sure your connectors are tight. Loose joints can arc under a heavy load, and nobody wants that. Also, double-check your circuit breaker. These things have a kick when they start up, and you don’t want to be resetting the power every time someone walks in.
