
Making Bathroom Heaters That Actually Work (And Won’t Blind Your Baby)
Designing a heater for a bathroom is a bit of a balancing act. On one hand, you want it to blast enough heat to warm up a cold room instantly. On the other, you’ve got to keep it incredibly safe—especially for infants. When we build these, we start with an IPX4 rating. That’s just a fancy way of saying the internals are sealed tight enough that a few splashes of water won’t fry the electronics. But the real headache? The light. The “Blinding” Problem Standard infrared lamps are bright. Like, really bright. That harsh glare is fine for a warehouse, but it’s way too much for a baby’s developing eyes. We fixed this by tweaking the spectrum. We use specific halogen gases and special coatings on the quartz tubes to filter out those aggressive UV spikes and the blinding white light. The result is a “soft” glow. You still get all that cozy warmth, but it doesn’t feel like you’re staring into the sun. Managing the Heat To get high wattage into a small bathroom unit, we use high-density filaments. These things get scorching. The trick is the housing. It has to be sealed well enough to stop shower spray and steam from getting in, but it can’t be an airtight box. If it were, the whole thing would just melt. We have to leave just enough room for air to flow through and carry the heat away from the chassis. The Trade-offs Here’s the honest truth: you can’t have a completely dark heater and still have it be efficient. That eye-protection coating we mentioned? It actually blocks a tiny bit of the heat—usually about 5-10%. To make up for that loss, we spent a lot of time obsessing over the reflector geometry. We shaped it to bounce the remaining IR energy exactly where it needs to go: right onto the person standing under it. One quick tip if you’re installing these for a big project: keep an eye on your circuit breakers. Halogen lamps have a big “inrush current” the second they click on, so make sure your electrical setup can handle that initial jump.
